Smooth and Blue

Album cover for "Smooth and Blue"

I had an idea for a slow jazz lullaby in which the canonical instruments would be introducing themselves to the audience, with the music in the succesive verses focused on each character in turn; however, the more that I mulled over that notion, the more that I was digging up some sort of memory of that having been done before, maybe more than once.

On top of that issue, the music was turning out to be a project that went well beyond my capabilities to persuade Suno to do what I had in mind. I had already stretched myself with MuseScore and the melody, what with trying to proliferate all of the instruments. I simply don’t know enough about how those different types of scores should vary, nor how I could submit them all to Suno without seriously fragmenting the music.

So I gave up.

I thought instead that I’d write about the relaxing, calming nature of slow jazz/R&B sorts of music in a more general manner, and that effort turned out very nicely. The music ended up somewhat different than the rest of the songs on the album (that had been written up to that point), and I liked it enough to try more.

Lyrics

When twilight falls and shadows grow

The horns are gonna roll out low

While brushes swing across the snare

with midnight whispers through the air

And as the bass walks cool and deep

Piano lays those chords to sleep

Let the blue notes take you away

Mmm-hmm-doo-wah, dreams are calling

Loo-lah-woo-hoo, eyelids falling

Let the rhythm float you away

As your dreams jazz out the day

The mellow brass breathes sweet and slow

While cymbals ride the afterglow

The notes cascade like velvet stars

As riffs and runs break down the  bars

And as the bass walks cool and deep

Piano lays those chords to sleep

Let the blue notes take you away

Mmm-hmm-doo-wah, dreams are calling

Loo-lah-woo-mmm, eyelids falling

Let the rhythm float you away

As your dreams jazz out the day

Feel the groove's gentle sway

Blowin' all your blues away

Jazz will brush your tangled hair

and leave soft murmurs sighing there

And as the bass walks cool and deep

Piano lays those chords to sleep

Let the blue notes take you away

Mmm-hmm-doo-wah, dreams are calling

Loo-lah-woo-mmm, eyelids falling

Let the rhythm float you away

As your dreams jazz out the day
